How to configure apache web server in Solaris 10

Posted by Unknown in , ,

Here are the steps...

  1. svcadm enable apache (or apache2)
  2. mv /etc/apache[2]/httpd.conf-example /etc/apache[2]/httpd.conf
  3. /usr/apache/bin/apachectl start

Then open your browser
http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1

For other IP address , you have to open your httpd.conf
then modify the default address 127.0.0.1 using your x.x.x.x IP address or your host name ( for valid dns )in " Server Name" line:

ServerName x.x.x.x

Check the current status: 'svcs -l apache[2]'

Restarting/reloading can be done through apachectl (/usr/apache[2]/bin/apachectl) but 'svcadm refresh apache[2]' is the preferred method.

How to transfer your existing dual boot system to a new bigger, better hard-disk

Posted by Unknown in , ,

Here are the steps-->

  1. First of all boot into windows and clean unnecessary files from all partitions. You can use any disk cleanup utility.
  2. Then run disk checking software (chkdsk /p /r) on each partition and reboot twice to make sure the disk is error free.
  3. BACKUP YOUR DATA.
  4. Download GPARTED live cd from here and burn it on a disk.
  5. Now shutdown your system and attach your new hard-disk. Remove any unnecessary media form your system (e.g. pen drive).
  6. Boot into gparted live cd. Please wait while it detects all your disks and partitions.
  7. Now select the windows partition from your old harddisk and click copy button.
  8. Select your new hard-disk. Select Device-->Set Disklabel. Click create.
  9. Now paste your copied partition to the new hard-disk.
  10. Make it bootable. (Right click --> Manage Flags --> Boot)
  11. You can also increase the size of your new partion.
  12. Create an extended partion.
  13. Repeat Steps 7 and 9 for other partitions.
  14. Detach old hard-disk. (Don't reboot without detaching your old hard-disk. It can cause big problems.)
  15. Reboot
You may face some problems, some of which are given below.

1. In case of a boot failure. Reboot into any Linux cd and try to update grub boot loader.
  • sudo grub
  • find /boot/grub/stage1
  • root (hdx,y) [here x,y denotes your hard-disk and partion number]
  • setup (hd0)
  • quit
2. You may also try to boot into recovery mode from your windows xp cd and run fixboot/fixmbr commands.

How to enable compositing in Gnome without using compiz

Posted by Unknown in ,

Do you want to decorate your desktop but don't want to use compiz (or your system don't support it). With latest Gnome you can achieve this without affecting your system's performance. You don’t even need accelerated graphics to run Metacity with compositing. It even works well inside VirtualBox! If your computer can’t run Compiz, give this a try. Here are the steps...

1) Run Gnome configuration editor ( gconf-editor )
2) Navigate to Apps-->metacity-->general
3) Check the compositing_manager box, and Metacity will immediately restart with compositing!
4) Now you can install Screenlets, AWN etc. to decorate your desktop.
